The Objective

The Wellness Committee was created to assist employees of the WA State Covid Vaccine Department in overcoming burnout and ensuring employee wellness — both mental and physical — was prioritized during an unprecedented crisis.

Leadership faced significant retention challenges. The committee used an equity lens and social determinants of health framework for every decision.

Our Approach (The 4 C's)
  • Collect: Data via strategy sessions, employee surveys, and direct committee feedback. All initiatives were cost-free.
  • Create: Monthly initiatives based on survey data and research, with materials tailored to department needs.
  • Commit: Lunch & learns, virtual group activities, recipe swaps, monthly newsletters, and a dedicated group wellness chat.
  • Critique: Feedback surveys and open forums; adjustments implemented at each meeting.
Outcomes
  • Weekly all-hands wellness engagement
  • Live presentations at all-staff meetings
  • Dedicated Wellthy Place Teams channel
  • Monthly newsletters to full department
  • Virtual Coffee Spaces for informal connection
  • Collaboration with WA DOH agency-wide team
  • End-of-year surveys confirmed employees reprioritized their own health

"Even with challenges, the overall approaches were successful. This model would have grown if there was more stability with grant-funded roles."

— Program Participant, WA State DOH
